On Marriage (The Prophet, Kahlil Gibran)

The personal stories of wedded misery I have been hearing lately prompted me to remember this by Gibran:

You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days.
Ay, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.

Love one another, but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other’s cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.

Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.

Yes, and a very realistic view towards marriage, too. Give your everything to the one who deserves it, but keep something for yourself; and none of that “two hearts become one” stuff, which makes me crazy! Two people, with two different histories, two different set of goals (which may be similar), two different sets of needs, simply cannot become one. And neither partner should be over-powering the other: remain separate and equal, each doing their own duties, etc.

mmm…”moving sea between the shores of your souls”…i LOVE good poetry…i just have a question which i’m asking in only general interest and not in any biased/prejudiced sort of way…what do you mean by “The Prophet, Kahlil Gibran”?

ah, never mind. I just looked him up and “The Prophet” is his book of poetry. Forgive me if I offended you, ukhti, but I never heard of him before- (and I knew there was something funny about the comma in the middle of the book and his name!) – He’s definitely going on my list of World’s Greatest Poets. *much love*

:D I only just saw your comment now, and was about to say that “The Prophet” is the name of his book…no, you did not offend me at all, when I first saw a poem from this book, I also was very very very confused about what the heck was going on, is this a book of hadith or what, but nothing sounds like hadith! So, I am glad to know I am not the only one to get confused by that!:D *hugs*
