Not by Islam though! By our Muslim brothers, who prefer to hold on to their notion that they are superior, and therefore can abuse that superiority.
The fact is, that a lot of Muslim women are abused. They are insulted verbally. They are attacked physically. They are treated like slaves. They have to deal with double standards. Men are intolerant of any alleged lack of chastity on a woman’s part, while the same men are promiscuous themselves! Daughters are treated second to the sons, and subserviant to their husbands. There is a very nasty imbalance in the Muslim society.
While this may occur 10x worse in other societies as well, it is a calamity for the Muslim Ummah, because we were told how women are to be treated. Did Sayyidina Rasulullah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) only address the women to be perfect? Did he not set down the example of how the Muslim woman should be treated, by his dealings with his wives and daughters and compassion towards the female companions (Radiallahu Anhum)? Did he not state in his final sermon during Hajj:
O People, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women, but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives only under Allah’s trust and with His permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with any one of whom you do not approve, as well as never to be unchaste.
So instead of painting a rosey picture that Islam says this, and says that, how about we actually start acting on it. Its one thing to babble to the West how good our sisters are treated, its another thing to proove that they’re treated well. True, our sisters have flaws, but realize for once the brothers do as well. Quit trying shove that under the rug, because that will get us nowhere!
Now that you made it through my crazy ranting, freshly baked apple pie anyone? 😉
