Mu’adh bin Jabal’s Return to Madeenah

It is hard for us to deal with the death of loved ones, and years later we think back and say if only such and such were here today to see this. It makes me speechless when reading about how Mu’adh bin Jabal (Radiallahu Anhu) had to return to a Madeenah after the death of the one closest to him… 😦 I know many of you must have read this, however I felt like posting this up so I can read it again easily from time to time. 🙂

Messengers of the kings of Yemen came to Sayiddina Rasulullah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) announcing that they and the people of Yemen had become Muslims. They requested that some teachers should be with them to teach Islam to the people. For this task Sayiddina Rasulullah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) commissioned a group of competent du’at (missionaries) and made Muadh ibn Jabal (Radiallahu Anhu) their amir. He then put the following question to Muadh:

“According to what will you judge?”
“According to the Book of Allah,” replied Muadh.

“And if you find nothing therein?”
“According to the Sunnah of the Prophet of Allah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam).”

“And if you find nothing therein?”
“Then I will exert myself (exercise ijtEhad) to form n own judgement.”

The Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) was pleased with this reply and said:
“Praise be to Allah Who has guided the messenger of the Prophet to that which pleases the Prophet.”

Sayiddina Rasulullah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) personally bade farewell to this mission of guidance and light and walked for some distance alongside Muadh as he rode out of the city. Finally he said to him:
“O Muadh, perhaps you shall not meet me again after this year. Perhaps when you return you shall see only my mosque and my grave.”

Muadh wept. Those with him wept too. A feeling of sadness and desolation overtook him as he parted from his beloved Rasul (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam).

Sayiddina Rasulullah’s (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) premonition was correct. The eyes of Muadh never beheld Sayiddina Rasulullah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) after that moment. Sayiddina Rasulullah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) died before Muadh returned from the Yemen. There is no doubt that Muadh wept when he returned to Madinah and found there was no longer the blessed company of Sayiddina Rasulullah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam).

  1. Think about how difficult it is for us to leave Madinah, especially the Haram, where the Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wa Salaam) lies, it feels like the heart is being ripped to shreds. To leave his presence, even in the cause of Allah and his Rasool, and then return to Madinah after his death…I can’t even imagine it. 😥
