Battle of Jamal

The Battle of Jamal has always been something in Islamic history that left me confused and hazy on what really happened. I’ve read numerous accounts of it, but never understood it properly. A few days ago, I happened to be listening to a lecture, and this incident was mentioned, and alhamdulillah he made it so clear, so I decided to write it down for future reference. While I was at it, I figured I post it here, so that maybe others can benefit too inshaAllah.

The killers of Sayyidina Uthman (Radiallahu Anhu) infiltrated into the army of Sayyidina ‘Ali (Radiallahu Anhu). Upon the death of Sayyidina Uthman (Radiallahu Anhu), Sayyidina Talha, Zubayr, and ‘Aysha (Radiallahu Anhum) pledged their alliegence to Sayyidina ‘Ali (Radiallahu Anhu) but also approached him for justice and that the killers be executed. Sayyidina ‘Ali (Radiallahu Anhu) differed, as it is the family of the murdered victim who asks for the execution or blood money from the murderers. Upon hearing this, Sayyidina Talha, Zubayr, and ‘Aysha (Radiallahu Anhum) agreed and both parties were at a mutal understanding.

However that night, these killers attacked the side of Sayyidina Talha, Zubayr, and ‘Aysha (Radiallahu Anhum), and started the Battle of Jamal. Not knowing that Sayyidina ‘Ali (Radiallahu Anhu) did not command for the start of this war, Sayyida ‘Aysha’s (Radiallahu Anha) side fought back, even though their intent originally was never to fight a war. They only came to ask for justice, but when attacked, defended themselves. Finally, Sayyidina ‘Ali (Radiallahu Anhu) managed to convince them that it was not him who initiated war, and peace was restored, despite the loss of many lives.

It is narrated by Imam Ahmad that Sayyidina Rasulullah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) had once told Sayyidina ‘Ali (Radiallahu Anhu): something will happen between you and ‘Aysha. Sayyidina ‘Ali (Radiallahu Anhu) replied between me and Aysha? Sayyidina Rasulullah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) replied Yes. Sayyidina ‘Ali (Radiallahu Anhu) replied Then I am the most unfortunate of people (for something will happen between me and the Mother of the Believers). Sayyidina Rasulullah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) replied No, and when that happens, take her back to safety. This propehcy was fulfilled, and after the Battle of Jamal, Sayyidina ‘Ali gathered some of his army, and had Sayyida ‘Aysha (Radiallahu Anha) escorted to Madeenah safely.

It is sad how this story is misconstrued many a time to make it seem like Sayyida ‘Aysha (Radiallahu Anha) was mainly at fault, when in reality it was the Khawarij who were plotting and behind this evil.

Radiallahu anhum wa radu’an. Inna lillahi wa inna illayhi raji’oun.
