The Trap

Its so sneaky how it all happens. Topic jumping as you’re talking to your friends, and all of a sudden it comes up. Did you hear about what happened? Those two sisters got into a fight about….and its goes from there. The thought crosses your mind to stop the conversation and talk about something that will benefit your imaan, but, my oh my, it sounds so interesting, just wait a few moments before killing their joy. The few moments turn into minutes, and soon into hours, as you sit there coming up with theories of why they’re fighting and how long it will last. But erm…wait a minute…what did any of this even have to do with you? But they’re my sisters in Islam, I care about them! Er…actually, if you cared, you wouldn’t be sitting there suspecting about the cause of their fight and giggling. You’d go and do what the Sahabah would have done…immediately re-united the two Muslims together to be in harmony with one another.

Narrated Abu Huraira (Radiallahu Anhu):
The Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said,
“Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the worst of false tales;
and do not look for the others’ faults and do not spy,
and do not be jealous of one another,
and do not desert (cut your relation with) one another,
and do not hate one another;
and O Allah’s worshipers! Be Brothers (as Allah has ordered you!).

[Bukhari]

Only after we have slipped into this trap, and realize how many people we have hurt by our careless idle talk, do those with a conscience realize what significance and harm lies in such talk.

May Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) guide us, and keep us away from such things, and may He forgive us and may He cause those we’ve hurt to forgive us. Ameen.
